The Community ICT Hub is a digital empowerment initiative by Black Pen Community Based Organization aimed at bridging the digital divide among youth and marginalized community members in Njiru Ward.
Many young people lack access to computers, reliable internet, and practical digital skills, limiting their ability to learn, find employment, or participate in Kenya’s growing digital economy. This digital exclusion contributes to unemployment, underemployment, and missed economic opportunities.
The Community ICT Hub addresses this gap by providing access to technology, digital skills training, and a safe learning environment equipping participants with the tools they need to learn, work, and thrive in a digital world.
In Shiranga, Njiru Ward, Kasarani Sub-County in Nairobi, access to digital tools, reliable internet, and practical ICT skills remains limited for many young people despite Kenya’s rapid technological growth. While the country continues to position itself as a regional digital hub, marginalized urban and peri-urban communities risk being left behind due to limited infrastructure, affordability barriers, and lack of relevant digital skills.
The Community ICT Resource Centre was established by Black Pen Community Based Organization to address this digital inequality by creating a community based technology hub where young people can access computers, internet services, and hands-on digital skills training. The program focuses on equipping youth with practical, market-relevant ICT competencies that enhance employability, entrepreneurship, and participation in the digital economy.
Within the communities we serve, unemployment and underemployment among youth are closely linked to limited digital literacy. Many young people lack exposure to basic computer skills, online job platforms, digital marketing, and emerging technologies reducing their competitiveness in today’s job market.
The Community ICT Resource Centre aligns strongly with Kenya’s national development priorities, particularly:
Kenya Vision 2030 identifies Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a key driver for economic growth, job creation, and service delivery. The Vision emphasizes the need to expand ICT access, build digital skills, and promote innovation across all segments of society.
Kenya’s Digital Economy Blueprint highlights digital skills development, innovation hubs, and inclusive access to technology as critical pillars for national transformation. The Blueprint calls for community-level digital inclusion to ensure that youth and marginalized populations benefit from digital opportunities.
By establishing community ICT hubs in underserved areas, Black Pen CBO directly supports these national goals by localizing digital transformation, making it accessible where it is needed most.

Black Pen CBO plans to expand the Community ICT Resource Centre into a fully equipped digital innovation hub within the planned multipurpose facility integrating advanced training, creative technology, and enterprise support to reach more young people and deepen impact.
