Building Sustainable Income, Skills, and Community Ownership

Social Enterprise & Livelihood Program

The Social Enterprise Program empowers youth and community members to build income-generating ventures that create jobs, foster self-reliance, and strengthen local economies.

Turning Skills Into Sustainable Livelihoods

About the Program

The Social Enterprise & Livelihoods Program is an economic empowerment initiative by Black Pen Community Based Organization designed to address unemployment and income insecurity among youth and vulnerable community members in Njiru Ward.

Many young people possess talent and motivation but lack access to capital, business skills, mentorship, and markets. As a result, unemployment and dependency persist, increasing vulnerability to crime, substance abuse, and long-term poverty.

This program supports participants to develop practical skills, launch income-generating activities, and build sustainable micro-enterprises that contribute to both personal income and community development.

Program overview

The Social Enterprise & Livelihoods Program is an economic empowerment initiative by Black Pen Community Based Organization aimed at reducing youth unemployment and income insecurity in Njiru Ward.

Many young people in low-income communities face limited access to skills training, startup capital, mentorship, and market opportunities. As a result, they remain locked out of sustainable income pathways, increasing their vulnerability to poverty, crime, and substance abuse.

This program supports youth and community members to transform practical skills and creative ideas into viable income-generating enterprises. Through entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and access to shared resources, participants are equipped to build sustainable livelihoods that contribute to both household stability and community economic growth.

The program aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 1 (No Poverty), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by promoting inclusive economic participation and youth-led enterprise development.

Why This Program Matters

Youth unemployment remains one of the most pressing challenges in urban and peri-urban communities. Without access to livelihoods, many young people face:

  • Long-term unemployment and financial dependency
  • Exposure to crime, drugs, and unsafe coping mechanisms
  • Limited ability to support themselves or their families
  • Exclusion from formal economic systems

Social enterprise offers a practical, dignified pathway to economic independence while strengthening community resilience.
